The state of AI music assistants, 2026

Every AI music tool we could find that claims to help you make music, sorted into three kinds, with what each one costs and what it can actually do: generate, assist, undo, explain, teach. Checked by hand, dated, and linked to the pages we read.

"AI music" now means three different things, and the word hides the difference. A generator writes a finished song from a sentence. A tutor listens to you play and grades you. A co-producer sits inside an instrument and changes the music you are making, when you ask, in a way you can see and take back. They are sold with the same words and they are not the same product.

We went through every tool we could find in 2026 that puts AI next to music making: the big generators, the browser studios, the new chat assistants that control Ableton Live, the practice apps, and one that no longer exists. For each we read the maker's own pages, wrote down the price and the platform, and asked five questions an assistant should be able to answer yes to.

The answers are below, with the day we checked and the pages we read. Where a maker's pages do not say, the cell says "could not confirm" rather than guessing. We make one of these tools, so read the highlighted row with that in mind, and tell us if we have anything wrong.

Generator

You describe a song and get finished audio back. Fast, impressive, and closed: you cannot open the notes, and fixing one thing means generating again.

Key lock

Notes are steps of a key, so neither you nor the assistant can add a note that does not belong.

One-step undo of a whole AI turn

Everything the assistant did in one turn comes back off with one press, however many changes it made.

Explains what it did

Each change comes with a plain reason, in the words of the music, not a log of the edits.

Uses the same operations you use

The assistant edits through the same buttons and blocks you have, so its work is visible and editable, not a rendered file.

Teaches by playing

You learn by changing something and hearing the difference, with the terms explained as you meet them.

"Could not confirm" means the maker's own pages do not say and we did not want to guess. Tell us through the contact form if you know better.

How we checked

One person read each maker's own pricing and feature pages on the date in the row, plus a press release or a pricing tracker where the maker's page needs JavaScript to show its prices.
Prices are the published monthly price in US dollars where the maker sells in dollars, and in euros where it does not. Yearly billing is usually cheaper and is noted on each comparison page.
Each of the five capabilities is marked from the maker's own description. "Could not confirm" means the pages do not say; it is not a no.
We are one of the rows. Our own cells describe what the product does today, not what is planned, and the same rule applies to everyone else.
Anything wrong or out of date can be reported through the contact form and will be corrected with a new date.

What is the difference between an AI music generator and an AI music assistant?

A generator writes a finished song from a description; you get audio and cannot open the notes. An assistant works inside an instrument or a DAW on the music you are making. The best assistants use the same operations you do, explain each change, and can be undone in one step.

Which AI music tools explain what they changed?

Of the tools we checked, only the chat assistants describe their edits at all, and none of the others presents itself as explaining the musical reason. Our co-producer gives one sentence per change about the music. If a maker's page says otherwise, tell us and we will update the table.

Which AI music tool is free?

Suno has a free plan without downloads, BandLab's studio is free, GarageBand is free on Apple devices, Ableton MCP and Producer Pal are free but need Ableton Live and a model, and this instrument is free to start with the whole instrument on the free plan.

How often is this page updated?

Each row carries the date it was checked. We recheck when a maker changes its prices or features, and when someone tells us through the contact form that something is wrong.
