If you already own Ableton Live, the assistant question has a few answers now. VIXSOUND is a paid desktop app with a chat panel that creates MIDI, loads instruments, separates stems and controls your session. LIA does a similar job through a bridge and a web app, with voice and remote control, and is taking a waitlist. Ableton MCP and Producer Pal are free, open-source servers that let a general model such as Claude or ChatGPT drive Live through the Model Context Protocol.

They share a shape: Ableton stays the instrument, the assistant is a remote control for it, and you need to know Ableton to judge what it did. None of the four is trying to teach you music, and from their own pages we could not confirm that any of them explains its changes or groups a whole assistant turn into one undo.

This instrument is the other shape. There is no DAW to own: the grid, the blocks and the arranger run in a browser and are simple enough to see whole. The co-producer edits that project with the same operations you use, explains each change in a sentence, and every turn it takes is one undo. It is for people who want the assistant without the Ableton, and it is free to start.

What is the best AI assistant for Ableton Live?

It depends on what you will pay and how much you want to set up. Producer Pal and Ableton MCP are free and open source but need a model of your own. VIXSOUND is a paid desktop app that works out of the box, from $9 a month when we checked. LIA was taking a waitlist. All four require Ableton Live.

Is there an AI music assistant that does not need Ableton?

Yes. This instrument runs in a browser with the co-producer built in. It is a smaller instrument than Ableton, on purpose, and the assistant edits it with the same operations you use, explains each change, and can be undone in one press.

Do these assistants explain what they changed?

They reply in chat about what they did. From their own pages we could not confirm that any of them explains the musical reason, or that a whole turn can be undone in one step. If you know better, tell us through the contact form and we will correct this page.

Can I use the co-producer with my Ableton projects?

Not directly. This instrument has its own project format. You can record a song here to audio and bring it into Live, or export audio from Live and slice it here.

Is Producer Pal really free?

Its site says free forever, under the GPL-3.0 licence, with no premium tier. You still pay whichever model provider you connect it to, unless you run a local model.
