One voice or many
Play three copies of the same wave, each tuned a hair differently, and they drift in and out of step with each other. That slow movement is what makes a pad feel wide.
Hold a chord and raise the width: the sound starts to shimmer.
That is the idea.
Width is slight disagreement. A choir sounds bigger than a soloist for the same reason.
